A pharmacy can return from a conference with excellent notes and exactly the same capability gap it had before the train left.
The Life Long Learning in Pharmacy Conference 2027 gives owners a more useful test: which workforce problem is important enough to justify four days of learning, and what will the delegate be expected to change when they return?
When and where is the Life Long Learning in Pharmacy Conference 2027?
The official conference and University of Bath pages schedule LLLP 2027 for 4–7 July 2027 at the University of Bath. The theme is “Prescribing the Future – Life Long Learning for a Safe, Skilled and Sustainable Workforce”. The conference is co-hosted by the University of Bath and the University of Nottingham, with current themes covering a skilled and competent workforce, sustainability and safety.
- Start with the pharmacy capability gap, not the programme volume.
- Send the person who can test, teach and implement the learning.
- Agree the evidence and 30-day transfer plan before booking.
Confirmed Life Long Learning in Pharmacy Conference 2027 details
The official LLLP 2027 site confirms 4–7 July 2027 in Bath. The University of Bath booking page lists the University campus as the venue and currently gives 27 June 2027 as the last booking date.
The official pages describe the conference as an international pharmacy-learning event co-hosted by the universities of Bath and Nottingham. Its three published themes are a skilled and competent workforce, sustainability and safety. The conference background page says the wider series brings together pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, educators, researchers, regulators, policy-makers and professional associations.
Current registration information lists an early-bird full-conference ticket at £795, a standard ticket at £895 and a student ticket at £275, with optional pre-conference sessions. It says early-bird pricing is available until 12 April 2027 and that ordinary day-delegate rates are not currently offered as standard. Prices, availability, inclusions, accommodation and cancellation terms can change, so check the official booking page before approval or purchase.
Decide whether the conference fits the pharmacy
LLLP 2027 is not a general pharmacy trade show. Its stated focus is education, workforce development and the learning systems behind safe, sustainable practice. That can be highly relevant to an owner building prescribing capability, developing pharmacy technicians, supervising learners, opening new services or trying to make competence consistent across branches.
The fit is weaker when the pharmacy has no defined workforce question, no capacity to release a suitable delegate or no route to test and share the learning. Four conference days, travel, accommodation and preparation create a real cost beyond the ticket. An interesting theme is not enough.
Start with a capability map. Which service, role or recurring risk is constrained by knowledge, skill, supervision, confidence, workflow or learning access? What does good performance look like? Which evidence shows the current gap? Which part of the problem is actually educational, and which part needs staffing, system design, equipment or governance instead?
| Owner question | Evidence before booking | Useful conference lens | Return test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can a new service be delivered consistently? | Competence map, supervised-practice findings, exceptions and capacity | Skills development, assessment, feedback and safety | A bounded learning pathway tested with the real workflow |
| How should branches share learning? | Training completion, repeat questions, document use and variation | Education design, digital learning and programme sustainability | One reusable resource with ownership and review evidence |
| How should supervisors support learners? | Role clarity, learning agreements, protected time and escalation | Supervision, professional identity and practice-based learning | A revised supervision routine and learner feedback |
| Which work deserves formal evaluation? | Defined intervention, baseline, outcome, data quality and permissions | Practice innovation, research and evaluation methods | A proportionate evaluation plan with a named decision |
Choose the person who can transfer the learning
Seniority alone is not the selection rule. The delegate should understand the live problem, have access to the team affected, be able to question the evidence and have enough authority or sponsorship to run a small change afterward. A colleague who teaches, supervises or coordinates services may create more value than the person with the broadest job title.
Agree the delegate’s role before booking. Are they attending to scan methods, present work, build a research relationship, improve supervision or design a workforce pathway? Give them a decision boundary: which ideas can they explore, what cannot be promised and which information must stay within the pharmacy.
Plan cover realistically. Removing a colleague for four days can transfer pressure to the branch and undermine the very learning culture the conference is meant to support. Include travel, preparation, handover and the protected time needed after the event, not only the days shown on the programme.
Write a one-page learning brief
The brief should name one workforce decision. Describe the current state, the affected roles, the evidence of the gap, previous attempts, constraints and the change the pharmacy might be able to test. Add three questions for sessions and three questions for peers or presenters.
Use the conference themes to sharpen the brief. “Skilled workforce” might mean how competence is assessed rather than how content is delivered. “Sustainability” can include the financial and programme durability of education, not only environmental impact. “Safety” should connect learning to practice, supervision and observable controls rather than assume attendance equals competence.
The General Pharmaceutical Council’s current guidance on supervising pharmacy learners in practice links supervision to professional standards, reflective development, leadership and a supportive learning environment. Owners should apply the appropriate GPhC or Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland requirements to their setting and verify current obligations rather than treating a conference as a compliance certificate.
Decide whether the pharmacy should submit work
The official submission page invites research studies, evaluation projects, practice innovations, posters, oral presentations and workshop proposals. It currently gives 6 January 2027 at 23:59 UTC as the submission deadline, with acceptance notices expected in the week beginning 22 February and a 12 April registration deadline for presenting authors.
A community or online pharmacy does not need to imitate a university project to contribute. A well-defined service evaluation, supervision change, training intervention or practice innovation may fit when the method, result and limitations are clear. The first question is whether the work is ready to share, not whether an abstract can be written quickly.
Check ownership, authorship, patient and colleague permissions, data protection, partner approval and any contractual restrictions before submission. Separate evaluation from research where relevant and seek appropriate advice. Do not submit commercially sensitive material or patient-identifiable data simply to make the work look detailed.
If the abstract deadline is too early for reliable analysis, use the conference as a learning opportunity and prepare the project properly for another route. A rushed submission can consume time without improving the work.
Design the transfer back into pharmacy practice
Before the delegate leaves, book a short return session with the owner and the affected team. Ask for three outputs: a concise evidence note, one recommendation and one test that can be run without destabilising the service. Slides and notes are supporting material, not the output.
Store the material where the team already finds current guidance. The pharmacy’s intranet or knowledge hub should show the owner, status, review date and link to the relevant procedure or learning resource. Do not upload a conference pack into an uncontrolled folder and assume knowledge has transferred.
For a multi-branch group, run a facilitated session with the relevant role rather than forwarding a general summary. Use one real scenario and ask what must change in the workflow, competence evidence, system or supervision. Capture disagreement and exceptions; they often reveal why a seemingly good idea will not transfer cleanly.
Connect any proposed change to the pharmacy’s staff-training system and clinical-governance controls. Decide who approves content, who can supervise practice, what record is needed and what would stop the rollout.
Measure the change, not the attendance
Choose a small number of measures linked to the original gap. These may include successful supervised tasks, repeat errors, escalation quality, time to competence, staff confidence paired with observed performance, training access, branch variation or completion of a defined workflow. Completion rates alone rarely show whether practice changed.
Set a 30-day review for the first test and a longer point where sustained use can be judged. Record what was adopted, adapted or rejected and why. A conference idea that does not fit the pharmacy can still be valuable when the decision is evidence-led and documented.
Use our pharmacy data analytics guide to define the measure and our pharmacy benchmarking guide when comparing branches or roles. Avoid turning a learning programme into a league table without checking workload, opportunity and case mix.
