Pharmacy in Practice Conference 2027: Make the Value Visible

Edinburgh’s pharmacy conference asks what value looks like in care, workforce and services. Take one defensible result, its limits and a plan for what follows.

Value is easy to praise and difficult to prove. A pharmacy can be busy, trusted and clinically useful while its evidence sits across booking systems, audit files, patient feedback, staff knowledge and stories that nobody has joined together.

Pharmacy in Practice Conference 2027 gives that problem a clear theme: The Value of Pharmacy. For an owner or pharmacy leader, the useful question is not how to make the biggest claim in Edinburgh. It is how to show one contribution honestly enough that the team can improve it, explain it and decide what should happen next.

In brief

When and where is Pharmacy in Practice Conference 2027?

The organiser schedules the conference for Wednesday 17 March 2027 at Novotel Edinburgh Park. Registration is open to UK-registered healthcare professionals, and the published programme themes cover patient value, confident clinical practice, a sustainable pharmacy team and making pharmacy’s contribution visible.

  • Bring one result the pharmacy needs to understand, not a folder of disconnected achievements.
  • Separate activity, experience, quality and outcome evidence before presenting a claim.
  • Leave with a named test, an owner and a date for checking whether the learning changed practice.

Confirmed Pharmacy in Practice Conference 2027 details

The organiser’s official Pharmacy in Practice Conference 2027 page confirms Wednesday 17 March 2027 at Novotel Edinburgh Park. It describes a one-day conference for UK-registered healthcare professionals and says Pharmacy in Practice membership is not required to register.

The published theme is The Value of Pharmacy. The organiser currently names four questions around value for patients, confident clinical practice, a sustainable pharmacy team and making pharmacy’s contribution visible. It has announced an opening address by Maree Todd MSP, the Pharmacy in Practice Lecture by Professor Alison Strath and a medicines-and-public-safety session with Dr Georgia Richards. It also says further speakers, sessions and programme timings will follow.

The page publishes a separate research-and-practice contribution route. The current deadline for an abstract of up to 300 words is 11.59pm on 31 January 2027, with decisions due by 12 February and final material due by 26 February. Submitting work does not register the author to attend. Check the live page and submission terms before committing time because dates, formats, eligibility and programme details can change.

Event information: Details were checked on 4 November 2026. Confirm the date, venue, programme, speakers, registration, eligibility, accessibility, abstract rules and any charges directly with the organiser before acting. Pharmacy Mentor does not organise the conference and this article does not confirm Pharmacy Mentor’s attendance.

Who should attend from a pharmacy?

The event can suit a community, online, primary-care or specialist pharmacy colleague who has a real service, workforce or evidence question. That may be an owner, superintendent, pharmacist, pharmacy technician, service lead, governance colleague, educator or person responsible for data and improvement. Seniority alone does not make somebody the right delegate.

Choose the person closest to the question and able to test the answer. A service lead may understand why patients leave a pathway. A pharmacy technician may see the hand-offs that create rework. An operations colleague may know which measures are reliable. An owner may be best placed to connect the evidence to investment, capacity and strategy.

Attendance is a weaker fit when the pharmacy has no defined question, no baseline and no route to act afterwards. A conference cannot compensate for missing ownership. It can give a well-briefed delegate new evidence, methods and contacts; it cannot decide what the pharmacy values or authorise a service change.

Choose one value question before reading the programme

“Show the value of pharmacy” is too wide for a useful conference brief. Narrow it to a result that affects a decision. The pharmacy may need to understand whether a new service improves access, whether follow-up is consistent, whether staff time is moving to the right work or whether a patient journey is creating avoidable inequality.

Write the question in plain language and add the decision it must support:

  • Which group of people or part of the pharmacy does the question cover?
  • What is happening now, and how do we know?
  • Which activity, experience, quality or outcome are we trying to understand?
  • What important harm, burden or balancing measure must not disappear from the story?
  • What would the pharmacy decide if the evidence is strong, weak or mixed?
  • Who has authority to approve a test or stop it?

Use our pharmacy data analytics guide to connect each measure to a decision, and the pharmacy audit guide when the question begins with a defined standard, a gap, an action and remeasurement.

Value questionEvidence to bringImportant limit
Does the service improve access?Eligible demand, bookings, completion, waiting time and route into the servicePeople who never booked or could not use the route may be missing
Is the pathway safe and reliable?Audit results, incidents, complaints, escalation and follow-up recordsLow reported harm can reflect weak reporting as well as good performance
Is the work sustainable?Staff time, capacity, training, rework, fixed cost and opportunity costRevenue alone does not show workload, quality or displacement
Does the experience work for people?Structured feedback, accessibility issues, drop-off and representative patient voicePositive responders may not represent everyone who used or left the service

Build a defensible evidence pack

A persuasive story is not automatically a reliable one. Start with definitions. Record the period, population, denominator, exclusions, source system and person who checked each number. If two systems disagree, explain the reconciliation rather than selecting the more attractive total.

Separate four kinds of evidence. Activity tells you what happened: consultations, bookings, referrals or interventions. Experience describes how people encountered the service. Quality evidence asks whether the work met an agreed standard. Outcomes describe what changed. One type should not be presented as another.

Include what did not work. Missing data, unsuitable referrals, delayed follow-up, complaints, staff burden and failed tests can make the conclusion more useful. A pharmacy that learns why a result is limited may be closer to a sound decision than one presenting a large number without a traceable definition.

The GPhC’s standards information for registered pharmacies makes pharmacy owners accountable for meeting the standards every day, including safe management, competent staff and safe, effective services. Conference learning can help a team improve its system; it does not replace the pharmacy’s governance, professional judgement or local approval.

Use the programme deliberately

When the final timetable is published, choose sessions against the value question. One session may help define an outcome, another may challenge a method and a third may expose a workforce or implementation constraint. A complete diary is not a complete answer.

Ask speakers what the evidence covers: setting, population, period, comparison, missing data, harms, staff input and transferability. A successful hospital, primary-care or research project may generate a useful question without producing an answer that transfers directly to an independent community or online pharmacy.

Use networking to test assumptions, not to collect endorsements. Ask another delegate what they measured, which definition changed, what failed and what they would do differently. Protect patient, colleague and commercial confidentiality. Another pharmacy’s experience is a lead for investigation, not proof.

Keep this event distinct from the Pharmacy Education Conference 2027, which concentrates on pharmacy teaching and supervision, and HSRPP 2027, which is a two-day health-services-research and pharmacy-practice conference. Choose the event that fits the unresolved decision.

Decide whether to share the pharmacy’s work

The published call welcomes research, clinical audit, service evaluation, quality improvement and evaluated education work. Those labels are not interchangeable. Classification affects methods, oversight, permissions and how the result can be communicated. Obtain appropriate advice from the organisations involved before collecting or submitting information.

Read the organiser’s current submission rules in full. The published guidance asks for a clear title, authors and affiliations, and says submissions undergo editorial review. Acceptance is not endorsement of the findings. Authors remain responsible for permissions, accuracy and balanced reporting, including limitations.

Do not place patient-identifiable information, confidential commercial detail or unsupported clinical claims into an abstract or poster. Obtain co-author and employer permissions where required. Explain what the evidence can and cannot show, especially when a result comes from one branch, a short period or a selected group.

A useful submission may begin with a modest claim: the pharmacy changed a defined process, observed a measured result and learned something that another team can examine. The aim is not to turn everyday work into research theatre. It is to make the method and learning inspectable.

Turn the conference into a 30-day action

Book the return meeting before the delegate travels. Within two working days, ask for one page: the original question, the strongest evidence heard, the main limitation, the implication for the pharmacy and the smallest responsible next step.

Choose one action from a short list: clarify the definition, fix data quality, collect a baseline, seek governance advice, speak to a partner, run a bounded test or stop. Give it an owner, deadline, measure and stop condition. Do not create a project for every interesting session.

At day 30, ask what changed in the pharmacy’s evidence or decision. If nothing moved, record why. Capacity, poor fit or insufficient evidence can be a valid reason not to proceed. A clear decline is more useful than an action that remains permanently “in progress”.
